Review of the iPhone 3GS

Most experts on the mobile phone industry agree that smartphones are going to become far more prominent in the market place over the next few years. With new advances in technology it is getting difficult to differentiate the standard functions of a smartphone from the standard functions of a laptop computer. In fact with mobile networking connectivity many smartphones can outperform some netbooks. There is turmoil in the smartphone market at the moment as most manufacturers are attempting to create a product to rival the Apple iPhone. But for the consumers this means that the bar has been raised and things can only get better.

The iPhone 3Gs is the current model in the range that started life back in 2007 and the 3Gs offers several advanced features that its predecessors did not. On the outside not a huge amount has changed, though the 3Gs now has a layer of oil and scratch resistant coating on the screen, which means it is no longer a magnet for finger prints and abrasions. On the back of the device the 2 megapixel camera of old has been kicked out in favour of a far sharper 3 megapixel version.

It is inside the iPhone 3Gs that the majority of hardware changes have taken place. The processor has been beefed up to 600MHz, though again to keep temperatures low and battery life a little longer, Apple has chosen to underclock the processor, which would run at 800MHz in normal operation. The 3Gs is available with either 16GB or 32GB of internal storage and Apple has integrated a compass into the phone, which can work in tandem with the GPS and mapping application to provide convenient navigation perks.

The iPhone 3Gs comes with the latest version of the iPhone OS, which was last updated in October 2009. There are many improvements to the new software, including the ability to cut, copy and paste text or images from web pages, emails and SMS messages. This is a fairly basic function that should really have been made available earlier, but now it is here there is little to complain about. The 3Gs has added in the ability to send picture messages to friends and family and the improved camera can now be used to capture video. There is even a decent little video editing app included, which provides simple touch screen tools to cut together your recorded clips.

Despite all of its advanced technology and software improvements, the thing that attracts most people to the iPhone 3Gs is its ability to access the internet at high speeds via 3G or Wi-Fi networks partnered with the App Store. The App Store is Apple`s digital download service that allows independent software developers to create little programs to run on the i Phone 3Gs. These can be useful, fun or both and there are over 90,000 apps to browse through and download across a variety of categories. Many of the applications are available to download for free, though premium apps which take advantage of the iPhone`s GPS may be as expensive as a standalone sat nav device.
