Sell your old mobile!

We’ve teamed up with top online service, Mopay, to offer you the opportunity to convert your old mobile phones into cash. Just head over to www.mopay.co.uk.

For more information, read on!

How many times have you upgraded in the last three years?

How many spare phones do you have in drawers at home, in your desk at work? Instead of these collecting dust simply follow the three simple steps and turn your phone into cash.
mopay.co.uk offers a quick and easy service for you to turn your old and redundant mobile phones into cash and help raise money for charity.
Mobile phones are now owned by 75% of people in Western society with well over 2 billion users worldwide. The majority of individuals now upgrade handsets year on year to keep abreast with technological advances. This is leaving a huge trail of unwanted handsets and batteries.

These old phones are worth money!

In the UK alone an estimated 15 million handsets are discarded every year and over 100 million are hoarded as they still have a monetary value.
With fewer than 10% recycled or reused, this means that by the time the phone is discarded they invariably end up in a landfill somewhere instead of being either refurbished or properly recycled for parts.

How does mopay work?

They give you cash for your handset depending on make, model and condition, mopay.co.uk refurbishes the handset so it can be reused within the telecoms market.
You could be sitting on handsets worth over £70.00 each! So what are you waiting for, clear out your redundant mobile phones and complete the three simple steps and next time you, your friends or family upgrade think of mopay.co.uk.

Free PAYG Sim Cards

As advertised in the footer of the MobilePhoneChecker, currently o2 and T-Mobile are giving away free PAYG sim cards.

Both are fairly good value - with T-Mobile currently pushing their ‘Top-Up Friday’ (giving free unlimited texts at the weekend when you top up £10 on a Friday), and o2 with their Genie-esque unlimited free texts when you top-up £30 a month.

So, what are you waiting for? It’s useful just to have a couple spare for those emergency phones, or for porting as you shift between cashback deals! Links below:

Shake it, shake it like a… Sony Ericsson?

What a great little innovative feature - the ability to choose a song by shaking the phone - reminds me of the tilt sensors in Guitar Hero.
Anyway, here’s the press release:

“The newest Walkman® handset from Sony Ericsson comes packed with great features. The SensMe function lets customers pick a song or create a playlist by mood, while the ‘Shake It’ Control allows them to choose songs randomly just by a flick of the wrist. And Track ID keeps them musically in the know. The 2.4″ screen can be used horizontally or vertically and has a great quality. It adds to an interactive 3D gaming experience, because the game controls can be used by tilting the phone in a direction.

The 40MB memory is easily expanded with a 1GB M2 memory card slot so music lovers can carry even more of their favourite tunes with them.

The Sony Ericsson W910i takes entertainment on the move to another level.

Here’s just some of this slim slide phone’s features:

  • 2 megapixel camera
  • Video camera
  • Walkman® MP3 player with Bluetooth stereo
  • 3D Java games
  • 40MB of internal memory and M2 memory card slot”

Mobile Operator Figures

Ofcom’s quarter 1 figures for 2007 provide interesting reading with regards to the four main mobile operators in the UK - Vodafone, o2, T-Mobile and Orange.

At the end of q1, the networks had the following number of contract subscribers:

Vodafone - 6,834,000
o2 - 6,298,000
T-Mobile - 3,821,000
Orange - 4,969,000

So, with 60 million people in the UK, over 1/3 have a contract phone. That’s an impressive share of the UK population!

Even more impressive is the amount of revenue per subscriber:

Vodafone - £64.50
o2 - £51.70
T-Mobile - £36.90
Orange - £49.70

So, just times the two figures together to get some real healthy figures.

So, in essence, don’t feel guilty about trying to find the best deal for your mobile - the operators are currently raking it in!

Mandarina Duck - the fashion choice?

The Carphone Warehouse (and it’s subsidiaries - e2save, OneStopPhoneShop, et al) won the exclusive rights to sell the Mandarina Duck phone, designed by the same guys who produce travel and hand bags.

Whilst it’s a relatively new phone, a review is available online for those that wish to read it - http://www.letsgomobile.org/en/review/0028/mandarina-duck/ - apparently it’s targeted towards the fashion-conscious female audience who want something to show off to their mates.

o2’s Online Cheap Tariffs

Stay away from o2’s cheapest online tariffs - they’re really poor value.

Take for example o2’s Sony Ericsson K850i phone that they’re pushing so heavily at the moment - their cheapest 12 month tariff, the Online 25 is £25 a month with a phone cost of £129.99, total cost for the term £429.99. Step up one to their Online 30 tariff, £30 a month with a phone cost of £59.99 has a total cost of £419.99, a tenner cheaper than Online 25 with 150 minutes and 200 texts a month extra - bargain!

Moral of the story - use the MobilePhoneChecker for your mobile phone choice so that you don’t have to go through the pain of picking a rubbish deal!

Orange’s Unlimited Bundles

Orange now have their animal-flavoured tariffs, which don’t provide any clue to what they offer (who’d have thought dolphin was aimed at those text-hungry consumers?).

Anyway, the real bugbear with their tariffs is with the use of the word “unlimited”. Some people may reminisce back to o2′s Genie tariffs which helped it gain a large youth demographic. Anyway, if you refer to Orange’s terms and conditions, they clearly state that:

The Offers are subject at all times to a fair usage policy of 3000 minutes or texts (as appropriate) each month. Usage above this amount will constitute abuse and Orange may monitor usage and withdraw the Offer from your account if the fair usage policy is abused.

So, why can’t they just promote their tariffs as having 3,000 minutes or 3,000 texts? It’d be a whole lot easier all-round.

LG U990 released

3 finally released the LG U990 this morning. From their press release…

“Touch the LG U990 now.

3 is proud to launch the newest offering from the leaders in touchscreens. The fabulous high-tech LG U990.

Everything is literally at your fingertips with the 3-inch high-res touchscreen, while the 5 Megapixel camera and it’s revolutionary manually controlled zoom make the U990 a rival for most digital cameras. Plus the dial around the lens acts as a jog dial so access to all the menus is super quick. Videos can be captured and watched in slow-mo with the 120 frames per second function.

Here’s a taste of what this sophisticated beauty holds:

  • 5 megapixel camera with xenon flash and manually controlled zoom
  • Video camera
  • MP3 player with Bluetooth stereo
  • HSPDA
  • Compatible with X-Series Silver
  • 170MB of internal memory and Micro SD slot

The slim LG U990 is the newest technological marvel on the market and is available on the £9 Video Pack with 90 video minutes.”

Whilst only 3 are currently stocking this, there isn’t much competition to reduce the TCO for this phone. Yet, it won’t be soon before retailers add this phone to their collection.

Update

The LG phone has now been released across other networks, but retailers are marketing this under a few names - either (surprisingly) the LG U990, or the LG KU990, or LG Viewty, or a combination of all three.

You can find them at these URLs:

The Link’s redesigned website

The Link have been going through a bit of turmoil recently, with the selling off of all their stores to o2, and migrating to an internet-only business.

They’ve recently re-vamped their website, hoping to make more sales. However, I just wish they’d spend their time ensuring that customers are not lied to. Take for example their T-Mobile Flext offerings.

Their Motorola Z3 (RIZR) “Best Deal” offering shows that on the Flext 35 (12 month) contract you can get 600 minutes and 1200 texts. But - this isn’t so - if you used only minutes you could get 600 as part of your £60 allowance, which equates to 1200 texts. Luckily, we here at the Mobile Phone Checker try to give you honest information, tailering the Flext tariffs against your needs.

You wonder why people get so confused when they try to compare the market?
