What is a refurbished handset?

A refurbished mobile phone is a nearly-new handset that has been traded in or sold on by a previous owner; has been returned as faulty by a customer; or, is simply unwanted after the cooling off period. It has been inspected and restored to full working order, where necessary, ready for a new owner.

Going for a refurbished phone is a great way to get the model you want without the eye-watering price tag of a box fresh phone. It might not come with all of the original packaging depending on its former life, but it will have been fully reconditioned having been cleaned and tested for charging, WiFi and touchscreen functionality.

How to find the best refurbished phone deal for you:

Using our refurbished deals table you can filter by handset model, monthly cost, and a huge range of other elements in order to get the perfect results for you. Always use a reputable site when buying a second hand or refurbished phone.

So is it better to buy a used or refurbished phone? Let's take a look at the pros and cons:

What are the benefits of buying a refurbished phone?

Really there's just one benefit of buying a refurbished phone. But it's a big one: Cold, hard cash. You can save as much as 40% on the cost of buying a brand new phone. And with the astronomical cost of the latest smartphones, that can be a significant amount of money.

What are the disadvantages of buying a refurbished phone?

Remember that refurbished phones have sometimes had a previous owner, and at the least have been sent out to a customer, unpackaged and handled, so they may have some signs of wear and tear. Some providers offer different grades of refurbished phones so you can choose to go for one in 'excellent' or grade A condition - remember this will be reflected in the price.

Generally refurbed phones don't come in the original packaging and for hygiene reasons they won't have the headphones that often come with the new version.

Phones usually, but not always, included a compatible charging cable - it's worth checking for the phone you choose.

While this is a little annoying, remember that the saving you make by going for a refurbished model, is more than enough to cover the cost of new headphones and a charger, if necessary.

Does my refurbished phone come with warranty?

All of the refurbished phones available through MobilePhoneChecker come with a warranty and cooling off period just like brand new phones. However, the length of the warranty and who is offering the warranty can vary from provider to provider. Always check the warranty for the particular refurbished phone you choose.

Finding a cheap refurbished phone:

If price is your biggest concern and you are relaxed about the make and model of your phone, then a refurbished phone is also an excellent choice. You can save a small fortune on the cost of a brand new phone, while still getting a great quality handset. Can I use a refurbished phone on my network?

All of our refurbished phones are unlocked so you can use them with your network of choice. EE, O2, Vodafone and Plusnet all offer refurbished phones which are available on the MobilePhoneChecker deals table.

Can I keep my existing phone number?

As with all phones you can arrange for your mobile phone number to be ported over to your new network for a seamless transition. See our guide for more information.
